Persistent tooth pain, temperature sensitivity, swelling or a deep crack may require root canal evaluation. Learn what the examination involves.
What root canal treatment addresses
Inside each tooth is tissue commonly called the pulp. Deep decay, cracks, trauma or repeated treatment can inflame or infect this tissue. Root canal treatment removes diseased tissue, disinfects the internal space and seals the tooth so it can be restored when the tooth is suitable to save.
Symptoms that deserve evaluation
Possible warning signs include persistent or spontaneous pain, lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, pain when biting, swelling, a pimple-like area on the gum, discoloration or tenderness around a tooth. Some teeth that need treatment produce few symptoms, which is why examination and imaging matter.
Symptoms do not confirm the diagnosis
Similar discomfort can come from a cracked tooth, gum problem, sinus pressure, bite overload or another source. The dentist may use dental imaging, temperature or percussion testing, bite evaluation and the patient history to identify the likely cause.
Can the tooth be saved?
The answer depends on remaining tooth structure, the location and depth of any crack, gum and bone support, restorability and overall treatment goals. Root canal treatment is not the right choice for every tooth. Alternatives and the likely need for a protective restoration should be discussed before treatment.
What to expect
Treatment is performed with local anesthesia. The internal space is cleaned and sealed, and a temporary or final restoration protects the opening. Many back teeth and structurally weakened teeth need a crown or other cuspal-coverage restoration afterward. Follow-up is important.

Frequently asked questions
Does tooth pain always mean I need a root canal?
No. Tooth pain has several possible causes. A diagnosis requires an examination and, when appropriate, dental imaging and other tests.
Will the tooth need a crown afterward?
Many back teeth and weakened teeth need a protective restoration, but the recommendation depends on the amount of remaining tooth structure and the planned function.
