Broken a tooth, crown or filling? Learn how to protect the area, what not to do and why a dental examination should not be delayed.
Why prompt evaluation matters
A small chip may be limited to enamel, while a deeper fracture can involve the inner tooth or extend below the gumline. A crown may come loose because of cement failure, decay, tooth fracture or changes in the bite. The appearance alone does not show how much healthy tooth remains.
Protect the area
Rinse gently, save any broken pieces and avoid chewing on the affected side. If an edge is sharp, temporary dental wax may protect the cheek or tongue. Keep a loose crown in a clean container and bring it to the appointment. Do not use household glue or force the crown back into place.
When the problem is urgent
Call promptly for significant pain, swelling, bleeding, a tooth that feels loose after trauma, or a break that exposes red or pink tissue. Seek emergency medical care for serious facial injury, uncontrolled bleeding, trouble breathing or rapidly spreading swelling.
How the tooth is assessed
The dentist evaluates the fracture, remaining tooth structure, nerve health, gum and bone support, existing restoration and bite. Dental imaging may be recommended. The goal is to understand why the break occurred before choosing another repair.
Possible treatment paths
Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may range from smoothing or bonding a small chip to a filling, new crown, root canal treatment or extraction. If repeated repairs keep failing, evaluating bite forces, decay, tooth position and material thickness may be important.

Frequently asked questions
Should I wait to see if the pain or break improves?
Minor symptoms sometimes change, but improvement does not confirm that the cause has resolved. Call the dental office for guidance, especially when symptoms persist, worsen or include swelling or trauma.
Can the office guarantee a same-day appointment?
No. Availability depends on the schedule and clinical urgency. Call before arriving. Life-threatening symptoms require emergency medical care.
